“We traveled north to escape the heat. At every town we stopped, people outside, staring at the sky. No one can remember the last time it had been like this. An orange haze rolled down off the mountains from some not too far off fires. I covered my mouth, the taste of smoke on my tongue. Churning clouds and the sound of thunder. We sat and watched as the sky swelled. Our only hope, praying for rain.”
