A sunrise at the end of summer.

Being an artist allows me to express myself in sometimes unexpected ways. My prints generally take months to complete, giving time to evolve both in theme and meaning throughout the process. My most recent print, “Daybreak” is an example of this, originally based on a series of photographs I took from a visit to Whidbey Island, Washington to visit my family back in 2023. Inspired by Toshi Yoshida’s Mendochino Sunrise ,1982, I wanted to emulate the physicality of light, through carved relief.

Hours and hours of carving gave me time to contemplate, with each printed layer building depth. Memories of emotion, those challenging nights feeling hopeless and lost. But as the night feels darkest, light breaks through, the early call of birds heralding the rising sun.

“In the dark,

My eyes red and swollen,

Nothing left, but dried salt on my face.

A glimmer, breaks through the horizon,

My chest, once empty fills,

I inhale, as that glow

A warmth, an embrace

Pierces the night.”

Printed in an edition of 22, available through my Etsy store.
